2018 in a nutshell and my goals for 2019

Flatlay including some of Laura's 2018 memories in the form of photos and cards

As we are approaching the last days of December and after a few eye blinks will be in the year of 2019, I wanted to do this quick post to outline my 2018 and make some few goals for the next upcoming year. I think that goals are important because they help to set your mind on things by giving a clear vision. Forget silly New Years’ resolutions – I have never been about ‘eating clean’ or ‘not eating any chocolate’. As a person I am perfectionistic and ambitious, I want to set myself SMART goals that benefit me and the world around me.

The Art of Making Friendships

Laura is sitting on a sofa wearing a pink blazer and a jumpsuit with coloured stripes

My partner once told me that friends do not have to match you perfectly. Hearing this made me reflect on the art of making friendships, how over the years I have learned that adjusting your expectations is one step away from loneliness.

As a teenager, I was ridden with judgment. To the point where I avoided being friends with people if they did not match my ideal. I was worried about my own self-image, therefore I kept away from people I classed as “rebels”.

I kept away from the people who drank alcohol because, at the time, I believed that drinking was bad. I kept away from those who could not hold an intelligent conversation, not thinking that everyone is worthy of a conversation.

People are good at different things – the teenage me was too judgemental to figure that out. Where did this judgment lead?

Makeup products on top a fluffy blanket

Hello, greetings, how are you doing today?

I thought I will do something fun and see how much my 'everyday face' costs. Let's face it (AHH LOVE ACCIDENTAL PUNS), I don't wear makeup that often. Most of the time, I don't have time for it - I'm either rushing to work or to university.  Creating makeup looks is so much fun, it lets you to express yourself, enhance your features. On the day that I was putting this look that I'm about to show you, I had a driving lesson, went into town to do some errands and had a lovely red velvet cake with my friend. But enough rambling, let's do this!

Thoughts on Blogging: The Dark Side of Consistency

Pink notebook that says write placed on top of blue glitter background

It’s likely that if you are a blogger, interested in blogging or social media in general, you have come across the phrase ‘consistency is key’. Consistency is the building block that leads to more views, success, and recognition. Consistent creators build trust of their audiences, this trust may manifest in returning readers or high levels of affiliate sales. While success can determine whether creators are doing well in their work, I wonder whether strict consistency is worth it. In this post, I will be discussing my thoughts on blogging and consistency.

Hello, I know what you are thinking – Laura it’s almost the end of October, where have you been? Why haven’t you done September favourites earlier? Well, I will explain.

I moved into my new spacious flat on 7th of September, then shortly after my Master's course started. Days melted away as I was either working in a residential care home or at university. I have also started my driving lessons at last (it’s terrifying). I feel proud yet so tired.

Anyways, I still wanted to share a couple of things (and people) that I have loved this month.

Nobody's perfect: 7 ways to become more authentic on social media

Pop art image of a blonde woman with her face cracked in half

Authenticity

(Adj) Of undisputed origin and not a copy; genuine.

Social media and blogging are a match made in heaven, it improves blogger success in the competitive industry and allows creators to be seen. There are hundreds of educational courses aimed at developing the effectiveness of social media use. It is evident that without social media, online creative work would not be the same.

On the other hand, social media could lead to an unhealthy self-focus, where we take ourselves too seriously. In the virtual reality environment, you can be whoever you want to be. This means that hiding behind the mask becomes an easy option.

It’s difficult to be careless about what people think when you rely on your audience. Nevertheless, there should be a balance between making what you like and making things in a way that results in others liking you. This poses a few questions:

1. What steps should creators take for maintaining authenticity in a virtual environment?
      2. What steps should be taken to reduce narcissistic egoism?

Urban Decay Born to Run eyeshadow palette: Review and swatches

Urban decay born to run palette surrounded by pink flowers in the background

As you get older and as your planners become overcrowded with errands, versatility becomes your best friend. When I'm getting ready, I'd rather have one palette of eye shadows that does it all than hundreds of mediocre ones. I don't have time to search for certain colours in my draws.
Urban Decay has recently released the Born to Run palette, I could be too late to the party but I have finally managed to snatch one of these palettes in the store. In this post, I will be discussing whether this palette is worth the hype.

Being unproductive does not make you worthless: 10 ways to find balance in life

Notebook that says make it happen. The image also has some red tulips

As I was strolling across the infamous Paperchase haven of stationery, I come to a realisation that we obsess about being productive. This made me think about my habits as a student - I used to constantly engross myself with making long lists and punish myself if those lists were left incomplete.

Even my weeks were made into planned lists because it gave me a sense of control. I knew what to do and what to expect. On the other hand, the curse of productivity addiction screwed my mental health. This troublesome voice in my head kept calling me worthless when I was unproductive.

July Favourites and Thoughts

Image with flowers that says july favourites and thoughts

July was the beginning of something special – the birth of this blog. So far, I have been trying my best to be active in the blogging community, support other creators and also be inspired by their work. I have particularly enjoyed these lovely bloggers this month – Ruthinrevolt, HelloBexa and Hayley Ivy. Thank you, ladies, and well done for your hard work.

In terms of thoughts more generally, I have been thinking that my mind should be always improving. Days spent not doing something useful is kind of a waste. However, perhaps this need to be productive has stressed me out a little. It’s all about finding the right balance and being kind to myself. I kept trying to figure out who I am as well. I am living representation of self-identity crisis. My boyfriend always tells me that the answer to the question ‘who am I?’ is – ‘I am’. My August will be the month of being and discovering.

The dangers of framing mental health issues as an identity

Closeup of yellow flowers in a summer field

Sometimes I have too much time on my hands and it’s both a blessing and a curse. Time is finite, however for me – it triggers an irrational response of thinking. The cycle of thought is difficult to escape yet sometimes re-evaluation is needed for improved growth, awareness, and understanding. In this case, I have been pondering about the dangers of becoming ‘an issue’. Perhaps you have experienced hardships in life – so have I, so have others.

I have been guilty of creating an identity out of negativity because I could not see myself beyond those problems. I had no sense of who I am (and I still have no idea). Consequently, using my mental health issues as an adjective for ‘me’ has been the easiest option. After all, being ‘the one with the irrational mind” brings you into a family of struggling individuals, a place where you can belong.
